Native to central coast of California to Baja California.

Can be used as an affective barrier because of the characteristic three spines for each node, or trained as a fence or wall espalier. In the winter it will put out nice glossy green foliage and blooms profusely with bright red fuchsia like flowers.

It goes dormant in the summer months so it can be pruned back if desired. Water sprouts do not need to be removed, unless they interfere with appearance of plant. Avoid summer water in most cases because it will cause rust to the leaves before they fall
